CiteLayer Chrome Extension — Privacy Policy

Last updated: March 26, 2026

This Privacy Policy describes how CiteLayer ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and handles information when you use the CiteLayer Chrome Extension ("Extension").

1. Information We Collect

The Extension collects only the minimum information necessary to provide GEO analysis:

  • URL of the active tab— only when you explicitly trigger an analysis by clicking the "Analyze" button, a keyboard shortcut, or the context menu. We do not passively monitor your browsing history.
  • API key — stored locally in chrome.storage.sync (encrypted by Chrome) and sent to our servers solely to authenticate your requests.
  • Analysis history — URLs you have analyzed and their GEO scores are stored locally in chrome.storage.local. This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly open the full report in the CiteLayer web app.
  • Plan tier & quota — your subscription level is retrieved from our servers when the Extension starts, to determine which features are available to you.

2. How We Use Information

  • To perform GEO analysis on the URL you submit.
  • To authenticate your identity via your API key.
  • To enforce your plan's usage quota.
  • To display your analysis history locally within the Extension.

We do not use your data for advertising, sell it to third parties, or use it for any purpose beyond operating the CiteLayer service.

3. Permissions Used

The Extension requests the following Chrome permissions:

  • activeTab — to read the URL of the page you are currently viewing when you trigger an analysis. We do not read page content.
  • storage — to save your API key and analysis history locally on your device.
  • tabs — to update the Extension icon badge with your GEO score when you switch between tabs.

4. Data Transmission

When you trigger an analysis, the URL you are viewing is sent to CiteLayer servers at https://citelayer.pro via HTTPS. Our servers fetch and analyze the content of the URL on your behalf. The analysis result is returned to the Extension and displayed locally.

All data in transit is encrypted using TLS. We do not transmit any other browser data, cookies, or personal information.

5. Data Retention

  • Local storage— analysis history is stored on your device and can be cleared at any time by removing the Extension or clearing Chrome's extension storage.
  • Server-side — analysis results are retained in your CiteLayer account as described in the CiteLayer main Privacy Policy.

6. Third-Party Services

The Extension communicates exclusively with CiteLayer's own API. We do not embed any third-party analytics SDKs, advertising networks, or tracking scripts inside the Extension.

Our backend uses Google Gemini API to perform AI analysis of web pages. Submitted URLs are processed in accordance with Google's Privacy Policy.

7. Your Rights

You may delete local Extension data at any time by removing the Extension from Chrome. For data stored in your CiteLayer account, you may exercise your rights (access, correction, deletion) by contacting us at ahwayhsieh@gmail.com.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy to reflect changes to our Extension or legal requirements. Significant changes will be noted in the Extension's Chrome Web Store listing. Continued use of the Extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
